Abigail- Thanks for your comment. I felt the same way last year, very unsure of what to expect in the ring.. You will do fine, keep your eye on the Judge and make sure the Judge can see your pig.
I feed 6lbs of high protein feed, we use Sunglo feed, formulated by Akey. We have had great success in the past with . We feed twice a day to insure that the pig is eating. This way I know if the pig is getting sick or slacking off, so that we can treat or try a alternate feed program. I clean the pen everyday and once a week I scrub the pen down with soap, to avoid potential health problems. I have a great group of friends and with them we discuss the pros and cons of raising a market hog. My parents are an essential part of my project, they are always there for me, taking me to the pens everyday and teaching me the knowledge they have acquired.
The only thing special I know is have your pig in market condition, weight should be in the 260-280 lb, mark. That is what the market likes to see, Last year I had a substandard market hog and did not place very well. I took that as a learning curve and did my homework over the summer and this year I hope to do better. That is my goal, always do better. Take the knowledge and move forward.
Good Luck !
